Character Questions:
1. Who is the person your character is most bonded with from their canon, or who is someone they miss the most and why?

There are two people he misses the most - his parents, Volke and Lissa. For the sake of focusing on one, his mother Lissa. It was known that she was a beacon of hope in Owain's timeline and inspired much of Owain's own good nature. In one bit of flavor text, Owain revealed that his 'finest weapon' was named after Lissa and was actually just a broken piece of the staff that she was wielding when she died. After traveling back in time to a time when everyone was still alive, Owain openly showed his pride at being Lissa's son and an intense devotion to keeping her safe in that timeline. Even while that version of his mother is safe, the death of his original haunts him and continues to inspire him as a force of hope and benevolence.

2. What are they most afraid of and why?

He is most afraid of failing others, especially in ways that would spell their death. This is a result of Owain growing up in a dystopian future in which he constantly lost loved ones in danger. These experiences have left him with a sense of survivor's guilt and have him more intent on protecting everyone around him. On top of that, he is generally insecure about living up to the bloodline of legendary heroes that he was born into and that he might come up short in comparison with them. Given everything he's been through, it's natural that his greatest fear is letting others down and losing even more loved ones.

3. What are their emotional, mental, and physical weaknesses and why?

Emotionally, he can be petty and childish, especially in the ways he clings to his heroic persona and can butt heads with others who try puncturing his fantasies. He also can tend to view things too much in black and white, so he can have trouble understanding nuance. Mentally, he often does not think things through and can be impulsive in his actions, and sometimes he puts more thought into his play-acting than what's actually unfolding around him. Physically, he doesn't have any specific weaknesses aside from being a human made out of flesh and blood who only wields a sword in battle.

4. What discrepancies are there between their inner self (who they feel they are) and their outer self (how they present themselves to others)?

Owain tends to present himself to others in a specific way. In essence, he's always larping or play-acting as some larger-than-life version of himself. He speaks of himself and his surroundings in grandiose metaphors, making his every action seem like the stuff of legends. He also tends to refer to himself as 'dark' and 'cursed' in an effort to seem cool. A lot of this is rooted in him trying to sell himself as a cool hero to others. He is also trying to sell himself on the image. On the inside, he is more insecure because of those he has failed to protect. He wishes he could be that hero he sells himself as and strives to live up to his boasts, because that means he won't have to fail to save others again.

5. What would make them happiest and why?

What would make Owain happiest would be a sense of true contentment. Part of the reason he play-acts as a legendary hero so much is because he wishes he could be that kind of hero and keep others safe. If he could be praised and celebrated in the way he claims to be, then yes, that would make him happy. But he would only truly be happiest if he can reach that point where he truly feels content and comfortable with himself - that he's done enough, that everything is alright, and also to have loved ones to share that contentment with.

6. What characteristics does someone need to have to be your character's ideal significant other?

They don't have to be a full-fledged hero, but they have to have some benevolence or good to them. It helps if the person does seem cool or heroic in his eyes and/or could be a great partner to fight alongside. He can appreciate people having a strong sense of justice or other great convictions.

Very importantly, though, the person does also have to be able at the very least tolerate Owain's nonsensical play-acting. That's something that's not going away, but he can tone it down to be serious and speak plainly when he has to, especially for someone he really cares for.

7. Would your character make a sacrifice to save someone else and why or why not?

Yes, Owain is that kind of person who is all about making sacrifices for others, whether in mundane or action life-or-death stakes. He will act impulsively and put himself on the line to save others, because of that hero mentality that drives him. Especially with the survivor's guilt he feels, it makes him more likely to sacrifice for the sake of others. This is actually outlined in canon with an alternate version of Owain, who cuts a drawbridge to allow others to safely escape while he stays behind, trapped, to deal with a wave of Risen. Even though deep down, he does fear for his life, he sees it as his role as a hero to prioritize others' safety at all costs.

8. What is one thing they would tell their younger self if they had the chance, or if your character is young, what is one thing they would want their older self to remember?

He would want his older self to always remember the struggles they grew up with, so that they can never be complacent and be vigilant about wrongs to right. After all, the whole quest of Owain and his compatriots is rooted in traveling back in time to prevent a horrible future from unfolding. Should they succeed in accomplishing that, Owain does not want to stop there. He should always be alert of other problems that could escalate into catastrophes that could threaten the world. The world is full of bad futures to prevent. Owain wants to always remember what he's fighting for, part of which is to shape a better future in which new generations won't have to suffer like he and his peers did, even if it does end up becoming a neverending battle.

9. When in dire circumstances does your character fight, flee, freeze or fawn and how does that look?

Depending on the threat, there's a chance that Owain might have a moment of freezing, especially given his trauma of growing up in a ruined world. Despite all his bluster and genuine skill, he can still frighten like everyone else and feel overwhelmed in the face of incredible danger. It could also be possible that his trauma is triggered, and he is reminded of some horrible memory that haunts him, from one of the many battlefields of his life. But ultimately, he is a fighter. He will draw his sword and do battle with his foe to the bitter end. Owain often battles with a dramatic flair, similar to the way he speaks, but in very dire circumstances, he will drop all of the pomp and focus on mechanical precision with his swordplay. This would be no time for joking around.

10. Why did your character make the wish they did?

This wish is the ultimate expression of the child-like hope that drives him from his core. Owain wants to live up to this ideal of a hero. Because of all the people he's lost in his life, he strives to continue protecting everyone he can. If he had a sword that incredible and unbelievable, he feels that he could truly live up to the image of himself that he sells to the world and be on par with his family who wield the legendary sword Falchion. With his own sword like that, by his own hand, he could be the one to slay all evil and keep anyone else from being lost in battle.
